Trinity Trojan Ice Hockey News

December 5, 2005:

The Trinity Trojans Icers completed their first weekend of league play by sweeping divisional opponents Hudson and Benedictine.

On Thursday night December 1, the Trojans opened up their regular league season with a convincing 4-2 victory over the Hudson Explorers.  The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back as they extended their lead to 4-1 before Hudson got a late 3rd period goal to make the final score 4-2. Senior captain Mike Kasmer led the Trojan scorers with a pair of goals while Dan Lambert and Kyle Konczos added single tallies. Senior Ryan Duale manned the nets for Trinity, turning away 19 Explorer shots during the contest.

The Trojans displayed tenacious fore checking while pinning Hudson in its' end of the ice for significant stretches during the game. Hudson goaltender Gordie Jones was spectacular in the nets as he stopped 32 Trojan shots.

On Saturday night, the Trojans opened the home portion  of their season with a 2-1 victory over the Benedictine Bengals. After a scoreless first period , the two teams exchanged special teams goals as Rich Tropf put the Trojans out to a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, the Bengals tied the game on a power play goal and the second period ended 1-1. But, Tropf tallied the game winner midway through the third period on a picture perfect pass from Mike Kasmer. The goal, scored while both teams were skating with 4 players, was the third goal the Trojans have scored this season with less than the full compliment of skaters on the ice. As in the pervious game, the Trojans out shot their opponents by a significant margin , but the Bengals goaltender played a huge game holding the Trojans to only the pair of goals. The Trojans did have an additional third period goal waved off by the referees for the net being out of position.

Trinity , now 2-0 in the league and 4-2 overall, resumes action this Saturday night at the Dan Kostel Recreation center as they host the Normandy Invaders in an 8pm game. The Invaders, now members of the Red South division, also have jumped out to a 2-0 mark in their conference and the game presents another challenge for the Trojans. "Coach Jackson (Jim) has always fielded a quick skating and aggressive squad", said Trinity head coach Mark Ferfolia. "We have had some classic battles against them over the past three years and I would expect that this game will be no different".

Following the game, the Trojans head into the Christmas tournament season as they will participate in two tournaments the following week. First, the NCL tournament at Elyria, followed by the Thornton park tournament in Shaker Heights.
