The Trinity Trojans ended their busiest week of the season , by capturing the prestigious Thornton Park Invitational Tournament with a 5-0 victory over the Bowling Green Bobcats. It was the first Thornton tournament championship for the Trojans who had finished second on two other occasions.
The Trojans displayed a high-octane, relentless fore checking brand of hockey as they limited the Bobcats to 11 shots on goal in the contest.
Two Trojans captured individual honors as Senior right winger Rich Tropf captured the Jerry Mastellar Most Valuable Player award and Senior Mike Stout captured the Moe Roberts Tournament Outstanding Goaltender award.
The Trojans defeated Cleveland Heights 4-1 in the opening round, then executed a near-flawless performance in defeating Shaker Heights 8-1, setting up the stage for the championship game against the Bobcats. Senior Mike Kasmer also had an outstanding weekend as he notched many key goals throughout the contests. Special mention also has to go out to the Trojan defensive corps who controlled the neutral zone throughout the weekend, severely limiting all of the opponents chances on goal.
"It was an outstanding effort by the entire squad", said Trojan head coach Mark Ferfolia. "We were able to get key minutes from each player which allowed us to skate at full-tempo throughout the contest, and the entire weekend."
But, it's out of the frying pan and into the fire, as the Trojans (10-3 , 3-0) host high-flying University School in a special Friday night game at the Garfield Heights Recreation center with a 7:30pm face-off. "University is always one of the top teams in the state", continued Ferfolia. "And, we are going to have to engineer another top effort to try and beat them".
The two teams last met in the Baron Cup in January of 2003 when the Preppers defeated Trinity 6-0.
